Mass is the tax. Distance is the tyrant.

Every structure, spare, and tool in orbit paid launch prices to get there, waited in the launch queue, and was designed around the ride instead of the job. Production at the point of need ends all three.

Drones and factories are one system: the same mesh that sustains also assembles. Fabrication modules print structure, and the swarm carries it into place.

This idea has receipts.

2018 · The award

"Factories-In-Space" took one of the top two spots in the SME and NSF Blue Sky Manufacturing Competition, the David Dornfeld Manufacturing Vision Award. The company began as that idea.

2023 · The article

The peer-reviewed follow-up, "Factories-in-space for servicing, assembly, and manufacturing," published in Manufacturing Letters, laid out the architecture in the open literature.

2026 · The traction

SME's own competition announcement now points to the 2018 in-space manufacturing runner-up advancing with National Science Foundation and U.S. Space Force investment. That team is this company.
